Against Definitions

I was invited to present at the Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE) at Manchester University in April. My talk presents the main arguments in the fifth and final chapter of The New Racial Regime: Recalibrations of White Supremacy. A recording is available here.

Following Cedric Robinson’s discussion of Marx’s meaning in ‘On the Jewish Question’, in his essay ‘The First Attack is an Attack on Culture’, to build my call for an abolitionist approach to definitions, I invoke his remark in conclusion:

‘Marx refused to accept the terms, the language, the conceptualizations of the society which he was addressing. He could not accept them because he understood them to be distortions, because he understood them to be very pointed, very clearly related to distortions, to the oppression of a people.’
