I was honoured to be invited to participate in the Courageous Conversations series of talks organised by Professor Malinda Smith. The talk addressed the argument in the second chapter of my book on how those who set themselves up as ‘contarian academics’ make the definition of racism the linchpin of the ‘culture wars’. My talk traces the origins of what has been purported to be the ‘normal definition’ of racism, which places it exclusively in the domain of the irrational, back to the conception of the idea of racism in the early 20th century.
